R/V Auk: NOAA’s High-Speed Hydrofoil-Assisted Research Catamaran

All American Marine (AAM) proudly delivered the R/V Auk, a 48’ x 21’ hydrofoil-assisted research catamaran, for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Operating in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located 25 miles east of Boston, this advanced vessel enhances NOAA’s ability to conduct marine research, ecosystem monitoring, and conservation efforts across 638 square nautical miles of protected waters.

Proven Teknicraft Hydrofoil-Assisted Design

Designed by Teknicraft Design Ltd., the R/V Auk features:

  • A semi-displacement catamaran hull, providing stability and a smooth ride in rough waters
  • Integrated hydrofoil technology, enhancing fuel efficiency, speed, and performance
  • A forward exhaust system, allowing divers to board without exposure to fumes

Modeled after the successful R/V Shearwater, the R/V Auk is a versatile, fuel-efficient platform for research and dive operations.

Advanced Research Capabilities

Built for multi-mission scientific operations, the R/V Auk is equipped with:

  • A wet laboratory for specimen analysis and a dry laboratory for data processing
  • A Morgan Marine crane, hydraulic-lift A-frame, and custom dive platforms
  • A 13’ RHIB tender and Nuvair 7 Nitrox dive compressor
  • Heated windows and full climate control for all-weather operations

The vessel enables NOAA to save approximately $80,000 annually in charter fees while providing dedicated, year-round research capabilities.

Optimized Interior for Research Teams

Designed for efficiency and comfort, the Auk features:

  • Accommodations for six researchers, supporting extended offshore missions
  • A fully equipped galley and comfortable dinette with U-shaped settee
  • Integrated Wesmar bow thrusters, improving maneuverability in tight spaces

Powerful Propulsion & High-Speed Performance

The R/V Auk delivers fast transit times and reliable operations, powered by:

  • Twin Cummins Marine QSC8.3M490 engines (484 hp @ 2500 RPM each)
  • ZF Marine 305A transmissions driving Osborne 5-blade propellers
  • A cruising speed of 20 knots, with a top speed exceeding 28 knots

A Vital Asset for NOAA’s Conservation Mission

As NOAA’s second research vessel built by AAM, the R/V Auk enhances marine research and environmental stewardship in one of the nation’s most vital marine sanctuaries.
