Unique Hull Shape

[pictureframe image=”https://allamericanmarine.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/hull.gif” ink=”lightbox” align=”right”]The unique shape of the Teknicraft hull combined with the use of hydrofoils creates lift and enhances the performance of the boat, while maintaining a smooth ride. The hull form is a semi-planing type catamaran and employs a combination of symmetrical and asymmetrical sponson shapes, thereby combining the attributes of both shapes into one hull. The symmetrical bow-section ensures directional stability in short swell conditions and following seas, while the asymmetrical amidships and aft sections ensure softness of ride and reduce the wetted area, enhancing comfort and economy. The boats feature a wide tunnel with a high ceiling between the semi-planing demi-hulls. This allows free passage of wind-waves underneath without slamming against the underside of the deck above.

 

Hydrofoil System

Hydrofoils are incorporated into the design to aid in speed, performance, and efficiency. The hydrofoil system consists of a main foil spanning the tunnel, forward of center of gravity position and two cantilever type foils mounted near the stern. The lift produced by the hydrofoil reduces the hull resistance, while increasing both speed and load-bearing capability.

The stern foils create vertical lift at semi-planing speed, which reduces the trim angle when getting onto the plane. This  significantly reduces both the power requirement and the wake wash in the low speed range. The main foil action reduces the power needed to maintain service speed; therefore, fuel consumption and running costs are reduced. The hydrofoils also further enhance the softness of the ride, especially in choppy seas.

Quality Construction

Each All American Marine vessel is built in a state-of-the-art 20,000 sq. ft. production facility adjacent to Bellingham Bay. The production shop contains 5 overhead bridge cranes, a brake press, shear, CNC router cutter, and a laser-leveled construction  latform. AAM follows a stringent quality assurance program; all employees participate in regular safety meetings and each craftsman has committed to paying careful attention to detail and ensuring the highest levels of quality.

AAM utilizes marine grade aluminum that has been specifically formulated for its strength, light weight properties, and durability in the harsh marine environment. Once the materials are delivered, they are inspected, sorted, precisely cut, and stored in a heated and dry area. Every vessel is constructed on a jig that is bolted to the floor and laser-leveled to ensure trueness. Each frame is prepared and attached to the jig in an inverted position. The hull longitudinals and plating are then installed and welded into place. Upon completing the weld-out of the entire hull and after all required inspections are performed, the hull is released from the jig and rolled-over to its upright position. Once upright, the custom deck extrusion that AAM co-developed with Teknicraft Design is installed, followed by plumbing, hydraulic, and electrical systems.

The engines are then put in place and pre-aligned. The superstructure is built concurrently with the hull, partially outfitted and then lifted in place at the appropriate time. The vessel is then sealed and the exterior surfaces are sand blasted and prepared for deck and bottom painting. While the system and interior finish work continues, the painting preparation occurs during the day, and the actual painting is done at night in a temperature and dust controlled area utilizing dry clean air.

Performance & Speed

The longitudinal chines inside the tunnel and wide chines on the outside both deflect water away from the hull, which reduces the wetted area and decreases the resistance of the hull. The vertical inside shape of the sponsons minimizes wave interference between the sponsons, which further reduces drag.

The combined effect of these features produces a hull with low resistance, low vertical accelerations, and excellent performance. The shape of the sponson also allows the vessel to bank into turns, thereby increasing high speed turning performance and safety.

Stability & Comfort

The hull is particularly soft riding and is ideal for applications where passenger comfort is critical. This characteristic is mainly due to the vertical inside shape of the sponsons, which reduces the planing area, thereby reducing the vertical acceleration forces. Another factor in enhancing comfort comes from the cushioning effect of the longitudinal chines on the inside of the tunnel walls.

As solid green water is broken up into spray while being deflected from the hull, it mixes with air streaming down the opening between the sponsons. This mixture of spray and air creates a high-density medium inside the tunnel, which causes a dampening effect each time the hull moves through a trough of a wave. Since the vertical accelerations caused by wave action on this type of hull are lower than most other types of craft, the vessel can maintain service speeds in relatively rough conditions without compromising the smooth ride.
